I appreciate your efforts Patrick and want to let you know that I am still a regular listener to Tides of History. It is one of my favorite podcasts.
I like the idea of you writing about books that you are reading or have read. There is so much out there that it is hard for anyone to keep up. One of the things I like about Tides is the way you explain your judgments about history. I think they are well informed and balanced. Having your perspective about which books you have read and which you think are worthwhile for others to read would be very valuable.
The prehistory and bronze age episodes on Tides are fantastic and you do great interviews as well. I'm thrilled to hear about Lost Worlds. I really enjoyed The Verge and was hoping for a follow up.
Welcome back! Really exited for all of this! I am excited to read everything you outlined. However, I would especially like to say we would love your book reviews for both nonfiction and fiction. On the nonfiction front, it can be hard for the generalist reader to separate the wheat from the chaff on more popular history. Would love to hear your thoughts on what’s well-done and what’s on the hackier side when it comes to non-academic history.
Heh, was wrapping up listening to the latest "Tides" episode in the car and came into the office to find this email waiting for me. You're inescapable.
I'm a huge fan of all the work you do. Major question: Please tell me The Pursuit of Dadliness isn't over? I absolutely loved all episodes. It quickly became one of my favorite podcasts.
Not over, just on hiatus! I paid for all the production costs out of my pocket, and I can't afford to keep it going without monetizing more than I have, so I need to think about what to do moving forward.
That makes total sense. I love listening to it. It doesn't hurt that you managed to assemble a literal greatest hits of most of my favorite podcasts for your guests. But, I think your core thesis is spot on, I love the tone of the conversation. It's such a fantastic way for me, 40 year old nerd exhausted dad, to spend an hour. I really hope you find the sponsors - or the tweak - you need to keep it going. I've shared it with a bunch of friends.
Patrick, I'm very excited to read your perspective on each of the areas you've listed. I often correlate what is going on in the world today with your Tides of History revelations concerning our collective past.
I enjoyed reading the VERGE. My 16 y/o cousin is very interested in history. I told him about the Verge and gave him a copy last year with the caveat that if he didn't think he would read it, he could give it back to me & I'd get him something else.
I'm happy and proud to report my young cousin also thoroughly enjoyed reading your book.
Tides is an invaluable resource.
I look forward to reading your new book as soon as it comes out!
Welcome back Patrick! Excellent news, I’m looking forward to reading your upcoming book, I found the Tides episodes on prehistory amazing. Maybe you should consider making this substack paid. Just saying.

Welcome back Patrick. Excited to see more from you here.
O hell yea! I still think about your article on our modern gentry from time to time.
Today’s Tides of History was excellent, and got me dreaming about Duolingo in 500 BCE. I would 100% be learning Tartessian and Oscan.

I love history podcasts and yours in particular. I really enjoy your approach to telling these fascinating stories. Thank you man.
"Depending on what happens with Tides of History in the coming year, maybe this place will be the home for a new podcast as well."
Oh, our attention has been got...
Welcome back!
Still here! Looking forward to your substack again. Halfway thru The Verge.....
